This performance installation combines choreographic scores performed by a group of dancers, interactive technology, and a sonic landscape that includes text and poems.

Dive into the captivating world of CHARCO – a unique performance installation set in a dystopian future in which all plant and animal life on earth has died away. In this speculative scenario, CHARCO (meaning ‘puddle’ in Spanish) invites us to imagine ‘cyborg landscapes’, expansive spaces in which the moving body seeks out new relationships between infrastructure, nature, and society. Audiences will encounter a group of humans exploring ways of being alive together in a piece that interrogates our connection to the non-human world.

The performance installation combines choreographic scores performed by a group of dancers, interactive technology, and a sonic landscape that includes text and poems.

CHARCO, a world premiere for The Dance Space, is an episode of a larger research and multidisciplinary artistic project, The Machine of Horizontal Dreams (2023-25) by Pepa Ubera, that examines, questions and re-imagines ideas of progress.

The development of the project is supported by Arts Council England.

About Pepa Ubera

Ubera is an artist and a dancer based in London. Her choreographic work challenges social structures, questioning how the body behaves in the current context. In her interdisciplinary practice she has been exploring other medias working with video, light, text, creating site specific and curating performance events.

Book tickets here

Learn about the interaction of robotics, AI and art from an expert panel of artist-researchers with first-hand experience in the field.

AI and AI-assisted tools such as ChatGPT increasingly appear in the news, and robots are infiltrating many aspects of modern life. But what do these technologies offer to the arts? Learn more about the interaction of robotics, AI and art from our expert panel of artist-researchers with first-hand experience in the field.

Chaired by Evelyn Ficarra, Professor of Interdisciplinary Composition, University of Sussex and Co-Director of the Centre for Research in Opera and Music Theatre, the panel will discuss the exciting emerging world of performing robots, concentrating on recent practice and research in dance, theatre, performance art and opera.

Why make art with robots/AI? What do we learn from doing so? Our panel, Elizabeth Jochum and Marco Donnarumma, will explore these questions and more during this free event that will include videos of recent work and provide a strong overview of the current important conversations happening in this field, with an opportunity for a Q&A at the end.

Book your free ticket here
